Steve Reich 2x5 M3 Remixed (2011)

Commentary

I rated all tracks based on my personal taste, and where appropriate I added also some comments - some tracks were rated just 3 stars out of 5, I included them either they were high rated in the contest or add some variety of the compilations.

01 - 2x5 M3 Kosuke Remix (DJ Yuki) - 7:14

A hectic interpretation of 2x5 M3, with its jungle beats and introducing a more melodic theme - a well done mix.

Genre: Jungle, Drum & Bass
Rating:

02 - 2x5 M3 The Lupus Brothers High Arithmetic Mix (Jeremy Leaird-Koch) - 4:56

Genre: Rock
Rating:

03 - 2x5 M3 Remix 8 (Kevan Paul) - 7:04

Adding a violin giving it a more classic appearance, nice.

Genre: Experimental, Avantgarde
Rating:

04 - 2x5 M3 Life in a Box (Lifinbox) - 10:32

Innovative and atmospheric remix, ethereal.

Genre: Downbeat, Ambient, Dub
Rating:

05 - 2x5 M3 Vakula Remix (Vakula) - 7:04

Despite being a dance or house mix, Vakula interpreted and remixed the piece eloquently and kept the inner spirit of the piece, one of the best mixes and also voted high in the contest, ranked actually as 2nd.

Genre: Dance, House
Rating:

06 - 2x5 M3 Metal Remix (Mike Low) - 3:37

Even I'm not a fan of metal music, this remix has surprised me and the translation into metal worked very well - the hard guitar lines are well integrated.

Genre: Rock, Metal
Rating:

07 - 2x5 M3 Okat Soundscape (Tyler G) - 57:51

Well, whenever I come across someone who interprets a piece to an unusual length my attentioned is elevated, and in this case the ambient remix of 2x5 M3 into the ambient space is very well done. A humming voice walking into the sphere of the 2x5 M3 theme . . . for almost an hour.

Genre: Ambient
Rating:

08 - 2x5 M3 Jeremy Malvin Remix (Jeremy Malvin) - 4:06

Genre: Experimental, Dub
Rating:

09 - 2x5 M3 Work in Progress (Tom Nguyen) - 3:31

Interesting submission by Tom Nguyen with his rap / hip hop style, very unique.

Genre: Hip Hop, Rap
Rating:

10 - 2x5 M3 Red Sky Lullababy Remix (Red Sky Lullababy) - 7:30

One of my favorite remixes and interpretations of the 2x5 M3 theme - whoever did this remix, he reduced the theme further and pushed the minimalism and so went into another branch of theme itself, like creating a "2x5 Movement IV" or 2x5 M4.

Genre: Avantgarde, Experimental, Minimal
Rating:

11 - 2x5 M3 The Color Space in 2x5 (Dustin Lowes) - 6:41

Genre: Rock, Experimental

21 - 2x5 M3 Phases in Sound Remix (Sean Moore) - 5:01

Genre: Electronic, Rock
Rating:

22 - 2x5 M3 Another Fine Day Remix (Another Fine Day) - 4:11

Beautiful and light remix - I would almost hope a longer version (a re-remix) would exist, very melodic and with the bells elevating the mood of the original.

Genre: Easy Listening
Rating:

23 - 2x5 M3 2x5 power 2 (Daniel C.) - 3:36

Short yet strong and innovative remix . . . I wished the mix would last longer, very promising.

Genre: Jungle, Drum & Bass, Ambient
Rating:

24 - 2x5 M3 Epic Remix (Ola Melander) - 7:07

Genre: Rock, Easy Listening
Rating:

25 - 2x5 M3 Constant Light Remix (Constant Light) - 6:37

Rating:

29 - 2x5 M3 Deep Reich (Aaron Yeo) - 5:31

Distorted deep trance approach.

Genre: Deep Trance, Experimental
Rating:

30 - 2x5 M3 Restorted (Have Mercy) - 7:17

Very atmospheric ambient / downbeat remix - relaxation pure.

Genre: Ambient, Downbeat
Rating:

31 - 2x5 M3 Double Helix Remix (Evan Kuchar) - 7:36

Slowly developing remix, and the end is most promising to listen to the other half of it, yet isn't there . . .

Genre: Downbeat, Drum & Bass, Ambient
Rating:

32 - 2x5 M3 Sliding Doors (Andrea Riderelli) - 4:23

Almost like a soundtrack of a movie - suspenseful.

Genre: Avantgarde, Ambient
Rating:

33 - 2x5 M3 James is a Monster (James Hill) - 9:05

With the incentive of a carillon or bells using different genres giving the piece more depth, interesting.

Genre: Experimental, Avantgarde, Ambient, Jungle
Rating:

34 - 2x5 M3 Fine Cut Bodies Space Dub (Fine Cut Bodies) - 7:00

One of my favorite remixes in this collection, a deep "fat" bass giving it a solid ground, spacey sounds, marimba (often used by Steve Reich's own arrangements) and water-like sounds integrated and having a wonderful dramaturgy within the piece - excellent work.

Genre: Dub, Drum & Bass
Rating:

35 - 2x5 M3 Takuya Yamashita Remix (Takuya Yamashita) - 10:36

With its minimalism almost looks pale among the other more unique remixes of the contest, yet, that very minimalism gives 2x5 M3 another dimension, a modern drum & bass face.

Genre: Drum & Bass
Rating:

36 - 2x5 M3 Snow Panda Remix (Snow Panda) - 4:22

A rocking and rattling loop approach to 2x5 M3, almost Steve Reich remixing his own piece.

Genre: Rock
Rating:

37 - 2x5 M3 Sonopoly Remix (Audiophilius) - 7:09

A sunshine remix, uplifting and good mood inducing remix - easy listening without superficiality.

Genre: Easy Listening
Rating:

38 - 2x5 M3 Dominique Leone Mix (Dominique Leone) - 4:38

This remix was voted by Steve Reich and Christian Carey as best remix in the contest - it is an interesting and brave remix among all the most electronic remixes, yet, it's definitely not one of my favorites. It is a very loud remix, noisy and the percussion is so overpowering the melody is almost gone. The use of the human voice in the remix is interesting as it goes along Reich's other works.

Genre: Rock, Avantgarde
Rating:

39 - 2x5 M3 Piano Phase Remix (David Minnick) - 7:19

It picks up the main theme of most of Reich's work, having multiple lines move out of sync and create a phase pattern - it almost avoids any other melodic development and remains so very minimalistic.

Genre: Rock, Avantgarde
Rating:

40 - 2x5 M3 Leah Kardos Mix (Leah Kardos) - 7:09

A remix a bit afraid to grow to something truly unique . . . the hand clapping is nice though.

Genre: Rock, Avantgarde, Easy Listening
