A few days with mild temperatures during the day in Ticino, and decided to go for the first hike of 2026.
Friday 2026/02/20: Giornico - BasciaArriving in Bellizona by train and taking train further back to Bodio and then the bus to Giornico where this hike starts. Previously Giornico was the end of a previous hike in 2023, so I was curious of the hike, although flat along river Ticino (same name as the canton). Nature is still asleep, the temperature is spring-like, but the sun is still low so no new leaves on bushes or trees yet - warm north wind though, yet above on the mountains the peaks are still snow covered. So, first day I hike moderate just 3-4hrs and have to divert a bit and go left-hand side on the Ticino, as the path is closed on the right-hand side, so I walk a bit into Bascia village and leave it again and rejoin the hike path on the right-hand side, about 1-2km I find a nice spot in the bushes close to the river.

Further south Lodrino, and then crossing river to left-hand side, some milky clouds and temperature falls immediately to 10°C and still north-wind. Cresciano, and further to Claro, two small villages and a bit south of Claro on the river I find a nice spot again, in the bushes - just ~4hrs, about the same as yesterday; further south I would be too close to Bellinzona and too narrow to find a good spot, too close to train tracks and highway, both sources of sleepless nights.

Getting train to Bellizona, and from there home again.
