5 Days Hike: Bedretto & High Strada Alta

About 7 weeks later I wanted to revisit Ticino and explored an alternative route a bit higher than the traditional "Strada Alta", and to stretch the hike I thought to start at the far west of Bedretto Valley and hike along the valley or higher up the ridge, hence "High Strada Alta", near Lurengo going ~300Hm higher.

Taking the train to Airolo, and a small postcar to All'Acqua, ~11:30 arrival, the road up to Nufenenpass is still closed. So I descend in the valley base (or close by) direction to Airolo, and 15:00 reach the Airolo train station and continue further to Brugnasco, and a bit outside I remember a good spot - long day for the first day, and I'm quite tired.

Long & good sleep, further on the normal Strada Alta until Lurengo, where I divert to "High Strada Alta" (I just named it that way) which goes parallel to Strada Alta but apprx. 300-600Hm higher, ideal for summer time. I continue to look for a good place for tonight, a shorter leg today so near Modiona (Predelp) is a parking lot for a nearby hamlet higher up called Somprei, and nearby I find a nice spot with a beautiful sight to the opposite mountain range.

Still night, and the sun reaches the tent early ~7:45, and leaving ~9:00 further on this new route, reached Predelp and further to Cari, where a bicycle race is going on from Faido (710m) up to Cari (1577m) and I walk along the main road, which is doable as there is little traffic, and reach Molare, and reach nice nature trail and all along small hamlets, like Cassin, Audesc, and small village like Monte Angone, a bit outside near Piano della Ruinella just before Suaggia I find a nice spot in the shade.

Longer sleep, and leave 10:00 further, beautiful open space with great view to the mountain range with still snow covered peaks, one hamlet after another, at Puscett I drink and refill both 1.5L bottels, as I expect no water higher up; still keeping the altitude all along until Cascine, and from there steep ascend from 1640m to 1940m, just 300Hm, but those feel hard due the steepness, and Bassa dei Cantoi is kind of a pass, quite unassuming, but nature is absolutely beautiful, and I descend direction Capanna Pian d'Alpe, and I see Ganna Lago Lungo, beautiful scenery. The Capanna seems not occupied, and I pass by and further until I reach the ridge, and a bit higher of Sasso Vedro I find my spot for tonight, in the forest and good shade, mild temperatures.

Waking up early, last evening I hear from far away some music, as if 1-2km away further down is a party, but I slept well, mild temperature at night ~12C, and 7:30 I decide to catch early bus in Sobrio - still "Whit Weekend/Monday" holiday today in all of Switzerland, so I pack and leave 8:00 descend from 1700m to 1100m - nature is particular beautiful at this end of the mountain ridge and valley of Leventina - and I rejoin the original Strada Alta, and walk a bit back to Sobrio, where this hike ends.

Note: if you care to follow this higher altitude Strada Alta or High Strada Alta, be aware there are no accomondations along the route except Airolo, Cari and Sobrio, otherwise just small hamlets which are owned by local people as far I saw; so you have to do this with a tent. There are enough water fountains along the route, fill your bottles when you can - be aware earlier in year e.g. beginning of April some public fountains aren't running yet, so have a water filter with you to take mountain brook water as elevation of ~1500-1700m isn't high enough to rely on purity of the mountain water.
