2008: Strasbourg

Fri 25. July 2008: Strasbourg - Basel - Frick - Bremgarten - Steinhausen, 247km (13:00)

Awake 7:00, but 7:50 departure, I first go to Strasbourg center, look at and into the cathedral, hardly any people in the town, very quiet - 9:15 I ride toward the south out of the city, and find the end or beginning of no. 468, and remain on until shortly before St. Louis before Basel - go a little slower than yesterday, although I have no wind and heat is still acceptable. Buying more eating and drinking, and riding more comfortable to Basel, 17:00 I cross border to Switzerland, passage of Basel I succeed well, then Muttenz, Pratteln, and then down towards Augst, along the Rhine on the main street but not bicycle trail - yet surprisingly hilly, until Frick, then the slight climbing Bözberg, then more steeply downhill to Brugg, and from there I go to Birmenstorf, Bremgarten, Obfelden at 23:30 and finally back into Steinhausen, 247km and again 13 hours on the bicycle. Total 525km driven in 2 days. Thanks!

Endurance with Recumbents

The first day was very fast, by noon I drove a good 140km, 3 hours and I had a tail wind - in the afternoon, as I mentioned the head-wind had slowed me down noticeably for 6 hours. With neutral wind conditions 300km would be possible, but 278km is still very good. I was tired in the evening, I noticed my knee very much, more physical activities would be hard. In the night I could recover, and the next morning, the knee had no pain anymore - just when I use excessive force then I felt my knees again.

2nd day was a more calm riding, but noticed that I no longer have as much energy, no matter how much I eat or drank, so I noticed that I am used up a little substance on the first day which was missing the 2nd day then. Sleep and rest are fundamental, on the first day I made about 30min at a break, the 2nd day I went almost continuously except for brief lunch or shopping and visiting a dome - would be better 10-20min break every 4-5 hours, which I will do next time.

  • Day 1: 14.75 hours, 13 hours riding, rest 1.75 hours
  • Day 2: 15.25 hours, 13 hours riding, rest 2.25 hours

All in all I am satisfied with a flat route and get up early and go before 6:00, 300km is possible, even with about 15kg luggage. This requires an above average fitness, which I am after the 7500km long Europa tour, but I am far away (and will remain) being an athlet, but I am someone who is just happy to ride a recumbent - and with a longrider as I use 80-300km are possible for a day, without feeling overly exhausted at the evening.

As I said, with a recumbent you have almost non-existent pain at the behind, even less so neck or wrist pain long riding for over 10 hours is comfortably possible.
