2008: Europe

Fri 27.6. Krems - Linz, 172km (10:14)

7:20 departure, and a flat tire again, a patchwork got loose again, 7:40 then really depature, about 5km to Krems, buy again in Hofer, because I'm not in the mood to enter the city to search for an alternative. As next to the Wachau, with beautiful mountains and small villages with tourists and many more cyclists who only parts of the Danube, and then go on the ship and to stay the next day a new piece to ride. That explains why I only partially meet many cyclists, and then again much less. Continue to Wallsee, and soon Linz - and contrary to my principle not to passthrough cities in the evening I pass through Linz as I want to make a long day trip next day. Beautiful city, comfortably in the evening. Approx. 5-6km outside in a small grove, I put up my tent, 21:45 now. Thanks for the day!

and once again a flat tire ....

Sat 28.6. Linz (Austria) - Rosenheim (Germany), 212km (12:02)

7:10 departure, have slept moderately well, reaching Wels, where I have to buy water (2x 2l) and I meet a nice lady which gives me direction for the next village and stay on B1. Until Vöcklebruck it's flat, the B1 - it is Sat, so I don't know whether there is more traffic during the week. Then it gets more hilly and the very green. Finally, I reach Salzburg, because I still have 80km to ride, I fairly quickly ride through the city, and approach Freilassing and the Austria / Germany border - nature is still vital - significantly - follow the road to flatter and Teisendorf, Traunstein - then I follow "Rosenheim" signs, which leads me to the Chiemsee, unfortunately only a few glances or photos - very beautiful, a bit hilly and reach then Rosenheim, which I passby or through numerous times as it seems, I encounter various "Rosenheim" and "Rosenheim". After 7km I reach Bad Aibling, after 12 hours on the bike and 212km. Thanks for the great day!

Sun-Tue 29.6.-1.7. Rosenheim (Visiting Days), 52km (3:36)

The 3 days I stayed at a friend in Bad Aibling, made short trips to the river Mangfall and a nearby lake for a short swim. I noticed it is better for rest days to still ride the bicycle for a few hours and not stop entirely any physical activity - feels much better.

Wed 2.7. Rosenheim - Kempten, 178km (9:32)

Depature at 9:30 rather late, toward Au, Miesbach, and the first kilometres already hilly and hot sun. Bad Tölz, Peissenberg via B427, which I follow somewhat heavy traffic but OK, then Schongau highway and I have to take side streets towards Kempten - after Markoverdorf a thunderstorm and I ride into a forest to find some shelter, yet, the rain is so heavy that the trees do not provide any shelter anymore. After 1.5 hours rain I feel cold even, but continue to ride after the rain almost stopped. I continue and go on B247 for parts. 18:30, but then beautiful hilly area before Kempten, finally approach Kempten and pass through and at the city limit find a park where I camp, 21:30 - tent pitched and taking well deserved rest at 22:00. Thanks!

Thu 3.7. Kempten (Germany) - Bregenz (Austria) - Bauma (Switzerland), 175km (9:03)

Because the campsite wasn't very remote but in a park I get up early at 5:20 and 6:00 departure. Buchenberg first, with a small climbing, the next hours slightly hilly climbs: Wangen, Lindau and reach via a detour from north instead from east. Next to the Bodensee and Bregenz, and so I leave Germany and go for a few miles back to Austria, I buy some more food, and go to the border crossing at St. Margreten into Switzerland, then Rorschach - over Switzerland dark clouds. From Rorschach good bike trails signs, but I realize they detour too much and so I take the main road again to St. Gallen with a small climbing, Gossau, und before Wil it starts to rain, very much so. I detour at Wil to Turbental, riding the valley continues rather flat to Bauma, where a good friend of mine lives, will stay there, early 16:30, but I noticed was a long day and short sleep, so I stay here overnight. Later in the evening it rains and gets cooler. Thanks!

Fri 4.7. Bauma - Steinhausen, 64km (3:25)

9:30 departure, to Wetzikon, then Bubikon where I exchange a broken adapter from the solar panels, further to Rapperswil of the dam, Wädenswil and then climbing to the Hirzel, when notice the gear cable is about to break, and needs an immediate replacement. Two tubes and two gear cables for about 7500km tour, and various flats front and rear. At 15:00 I reach Steinhausen. Wonderful journey - my thanks to all who have supported me!
