5 Days Hike: Bedretto Valley

I have been waiting for a time window to hike a bit longer than just 2-3 days, and that arrived August 8 - a few days stable weather and I decided to hike the Bedretto valley (Ticino) again, and this time the high elevation hiking path along the nothern (I did before) and southern slope (new to me).

Taking train to Airolo, and from there Postauto to St. Gotthard pass, arriving ~10:40 and then descending slightly and entering the Bedretto valley, the first leg I was hiking before, so I knew how far I would hike - mild temperatures and beautiful sight into the valley at ~2000m elevation most of the day. Near Alpe di Ruino I ascend from the path and find a nice spot for tonight - apprx. 1hr hike away from Capanna Piansecco CAS.

Chilly night, apprx. 5-7C early morning, but then the sun rises warming up everything quickly, I reach Alpe di Cruina.

And continue then small ascend from 2000m to 2250m with a small shortcut reaching Pian Tondo, and so switched the Bedretto valley side from the northern slope to the southern slope or side - and continue a bit further to San Giacomo, where the italian border is nearby.

Chilly night again, good sleep, and leaving 8:30 and looking into the italian valley close by, but then return again to the Bedretto valley, Sabbiasco, Folcra di Mezzo where I find a nice spot again, a short leg today.

Good sleep, and continue to Alpe di Cristallina, and Pescium - and since I decided to have the last day of the hike, this also is a shorter leg, at Alpe di Pescium I find a nice spot in the midst of blueberry filled meadows.

Last day of the hike, just reaching Pescium cable car station, and then descending steeply through forest and very narrow hiking path, and reaching Nante, a small village at 1400m elevation, and further to 1140m and walking along the main street to the Airolo trainstation, where this brief hike ends.

I was hiking the Bedretto valley before, the southern slope/side was new to me, and its meadows are a beautiful sight, and lot of opportunities to pitch the tent. As I spent 5 days around 2000-2300m elevation, the temperatures were mild between 15-20C, but meanwhile in the flatlands (~400m elevation) reaching 30-34C.

Summer of 2024 so far has brought a lot of rain and thunderstorms, and almost each time thunderstorms crossed Switzerland there were landslides and floods. In some regions roads, hiking paths have been closed as damaged or dangerous to use for weeks, as I wrote before, some regions have been closed still I was hiking earlier this year. Needless to say, thunderstorms in high regions is quite dangerous to experience, especially above the forestline (1800-2000m) where one becomes pointy exposure wide along and only metal can be one's tent or hiking sticks, so one has to descend into the next forest or at least locate to an indentation some sort e.g. between two cliffs.
