2 Days Hike: Mesocco - Lumino

The weather forecast gave me a small window to do the last hike for this year in the southern part of Switzerland, a region called Misox belonging to the canton Grisons/Graubuenden, yet, seamless connected to Ticino just outside of Bellinzona.

Taking train from Zug 7:30 to Bellinzona, and then per bus to Mesocco arriving ~10:00.

In the north low hanging raining/snowing clouds and just a bit rain where I start in Mesocco going south, and as I walk on former train track foundation slowly warm winds start sudddenly and stop again, and around noon the clouds dissolve and warm wind so called "foehn" (compressed air from noth swapping over the alps and due compression 5-10°C warmed) coming from north. I quickly changed my raincoat to the lightweight jacket and later in the afternoon just with two layers of functional shirts, short and long sleeve on top.

The valley is held in brown tone, all the leaves have fallen from the trees, the low sun gives the impression of early morning due the nice mild temperature - this impression lasts the entire day - the shortest daylight today. I only hike for 4 hours today, just a brief 10min rest to eat something - and then looking for the nice spot for tonight. A place in the forest but still flat enough to pitch the tent, with the hope I would get some early sunlight.

Very good rest and long sleep - yet, the sunlight won't reach my place any time soon, so I pack 8:30 and continue the hike now on rather flat terrain. The sun won't reach most of the trail I walk so there are colds winds (~5°C) coming from the east side down into the valley, and suddenly from south and north warm winds apprx. 15°C start and stop suddenly again - it's quite surprising for me to experience such abrupt change of wind temperatures. I reach Reveredo eventually and continue and around 13:30 strong almost stormy warm winds pickup and it's about 18°C now even in the shadow of the mountains, so it's nice to continue the hike. Just before 14:00 I find a nice spot for tonight, as I'm getting closer to Bellinzona but want to have some distance to the next villages - eating my dinner and resting 19:00.

Waking up early ~6:00 after good sleep, and it's about 2°C now and windy - at 8:00 I start to pack and depart 8:30, and then realize that I can pick up the next bus nearby; taking the bus in Lumino at 8:50 and arriving back in Zug ~11:30 again - perfect public transportation.

The "foehn" as mentioned is air which is pushed over the alps and compresses there and thereby warms up. This wind is either from the south to the north, or from the north to the south - it usually rains where the air comes from and where it goes to passing the alps there cloudless and warm weather sets in. So, when there is rain in northern part of Switzerland, often the south like Ticino experiences sunny and warmer weather - like this time for me.

Also, the new tent Naturehike "Cloud Up 2" did quite well the past trips this year, it didn't leak, easy to pack, easy to pitch, lightweight.
