3 Days Hike: Thusis - St. Bernadino

A few days stable weather, and I decided to hike a part of a longer hike in the St. Bernadino region - this time from Thusis to St. Bernadinopass and then the San Bernadino village close by.

Taking the train to Thusis, arrival 12:30 - and hiking on the old street along the river, narrow valley, steep cliffs: Viamala

- old road close to Hinterrhein river. Once I reached Zillis the valley opens up again, and meadows appear in sight. Passing Andeer and hiking up to Baerenburg and the ruins of an old castle (which I can't spot) and in the forest find a spot on moss overgrown boulder where I pitch my tent for tonight.

Good sleep, the sun reaches the tent, and leave around 8:45 and follow the river further, sometimes in the forest, sometimes close to the street. The highway, the main street and the hiking path along each other - the valley very narrow which opens up again near Sufers. In Spluegen I shop some additional food for the next days, and continue toward Rheinwald and "Schoene Bodae" (beautiful ground) where I walk a bit into the forest and find my place for tonight. Nearby is a music festival called "OpenAir im Rheinwald" which plays live-music until late night, and the sound travels through the forest - eventually they go to sleep as well.

Short night due the music, leaving around 9:00 and I walk through the festival with a stage and many camping tents spread over the meadow around (no photos), and continue to Nufenen and Hinterrhein, and then the steeper but brief ascend begins, about 13:30 I reach the Ospiz St. Bernadino, yet no water fountain so I leave quickly back on the hiking path apprx. 10min away more hidden, and on an outlet of a small pond I filter some water and refill my two 1.5L bottles again. Strong wind from the south, 10-15°C depending whether a cloud shadows the sun or not - I decide to descend a bit as near the top of the pass it's too windy and probably also chilly during the night - yet, very late before the village Bernadino I find a suitable place for the tent - it's still sunny with huge clouds moving fast west to east.

Rain during the night and early morning. Leaving 7:30 and just 20 min I'm in the village San Bernadino - the scenery is foggy and dark due the overcast. Bus departure at 8:14 (Expressbus to Bellinzona), and in Zug already at 10:30 - incredible fast connections.
